Discipline of Gastroenterology

About the Discipline

The Department is currently focused on providing tertiary level gastroenterology services at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital which caters for the entire KwaZulu-Natal and the eastern part of the Eastern Cape Province.

A wide range of tertiary level endoscopic and other procedures are performed as part of service delivery whilst providing an arena for post graduate gastroenterology training. The high level of and demand for investigative and interventional procedures place operational time constraints on the small complement of procedurists.

Gastroenterology services are co-ordinated and managed within the overall referral system through the District Hospitals throughout the Province to Regional and the Tertiary/ Central Hospital Services.

Gastroenterological procedures are currently provided in collaboration with the Department of Surgery at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central hospital within the Durban Functional Region.

Routine upper and lower Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (with or without biopsy polypectomy, dilatation etc.) is performed at all Regional Hospitals. A daily Gastroscopy service and a thrice weekly Colonoscopy service for both in- and outpatients at King Edward VIII.

Gastroenterology Specialist Outpatient Services: Consultative Services: One (1) Clinic per week at King Edward VIII and Inkosi Albert Luthuli respectively for acute and chronic diseases.

Vision and Mission

The Department of Gastroenterology subscribes to the mission of the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine “to produce highly qualified and experienced medical practitioners dedicated to improving the quality of life of South Africans.”

The Department of Gastroenterology is thus committed to service excellence, quality undergraduate and postgraduate education and the pursuit of a robust research agenda.
