The aims of the department are to provide training for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and other allied health care workers, provide a centre of excellence for the assessment and management of the older person with multi-system disease, undertake research in the area of ageing and perform an advocacy role for the older person.
Our clinical service is based at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital and consists of inpatient beds for the acute care of the older person with multisystem disease, a weekly outpatient clinic and monthly “Memory” and Movement Disorder Clinics. The Memory Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic run by the neurologists with additional input from psychiatry, psychology and social work departments.
A primary goal of the Department is to support and develop district and regional services for the care of the elderly with clear referral pathways between the different levels of the provincial health service, vertically and horizontally and to provide educational opportunities in Geriatric Medicine for all health care workers. The Department is actively involved in the Geriatric Medicine Course held annually and trains candidates for the Diploma in Geriatric Medicine.
The department has one consultant, one senior medical officer and two registrars rotating from the general medical pool.
The Chair in Geriatrics was established in 2000, with an endowment from the Aaron Beare Family Foundation and resides in the School of Clinical Medicine. Professor Bilkish Cassim was appointed Associate Professor/Chief Specialist and the first head of department in 2000.
The Department is actively involved in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes of the Division of Medicine and provides a clinical service at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital.
Professor Cassim is an executive member of the South African Geriatrics Society having served as President for 2 terms 2006 – 2009, an executive member of the National Osteoporosis Foundation of South Africa and a councillor of the College of Physicians of South Africa.
Study Opportunities
The Department of Geriatrics participates in the undergraduate and postgraduate programs of the Division of Medicine.
A journal club alternating with Topic Discussions is held on Fridays at the seminar room at the Geriatrics/Rheumatology clinic at IALCH as part of the Diploma in Geriatric Medicine course.
International Collaboration
The department is a partner in the International Collaboration for the Care of the Elderly (I.C.C.E.) with the National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly (NICE), Canada. The aim of this initiative is knowledge transfer. The department has chosen the field of dementia and will work in conjunction with Dr Suvira Ramlall in establishing culturally sensitive and appropriate tools for the assessment of cognition.
Clinical Services
The clinical services are provided at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital and includes inpatient, outpatient and consultative services. A Geriatrics clinic (for older persons with complicated multisystem disorder) is held weekly and multidisciplinary Memory and Movement Disorders clinics led by the Department of Neurology are held monthly.
