EXAMINATION IN INTERNAL MEDICINE FOR FOREIGN MEDICAL GRADUATES

REGISTRATION AND  ADMINISTRATION

Please note that all enquiries regarding registration, examination times and venues for this examination must be directed to the appropriate faculty office at Medical School. The Division of Medicine is not responsible for any of the administration and will not be able to answer your enquiries.

OUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE FOREIGN MEDICAL GRADUATE EXAMINATION

Please be aware that many foreign medical graduates find the examination in internal medicine difficult, and overall the pass rate is usually less than 50%. Many graduates of foreign medical schools appear to have trained in a different system to the one employed in South African medical schools, and if they have not paid particular attention to aligning their performance with the techniques, approaches and standards required of South African graduates in preparation for this examination, they tend to perform poorly.

WHAT DO WE EXPECT?

our vision for our graduates is that they should be competent, caring, professional and thinking clinicians. In the course of the MCQ and directly observed clinical examination, we will largely be  assessing your clinical competence and your ability to think and reason around clinical problems. But both caring and professional behaviour are expected, and any evidence during the clinical examination of lack of professionalism or lack of concern for the patient will affect your assessment negatively.

FORMAT OF THE EXAMINATION

This is a two-part examination.

  1. Multiple choice question paper: 100 questions /100 marks (three hours). This provides 50% of your total mark.
  2. Directly observed clinical examination. Three short clinical cases of 20 minutes each. This provides the remaining 50% of your total mark.
Subminima

In order to pass you must satisfy all of the following criteria:
  • Obtain 50% or more overall
  • Obtain 50% or more independently in the MCQ assessment
  • Obtain 50% or more independently in the clinical assessment
